Vol. 548 No. 3

Written Answers. - Archaeological Sites.

Ulick Burke

Question:

183 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands when Dúchas will make a final report in relation to Drumacoo Cemetery, Kilcolgan, County Galway; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4921/02]

I am advised by my officials that a site previously proposed by Galway County Council for an extension to the burial ground at Drumacoo was unacceptable for archaeological reasons. Late in 2001, the council requested the views of Dúchas, the heritage services division of my Department, in relation to an alternative site the council is now proposing for the burial ground extension. An inspection of this alternative site is being undertaken this week and I expect to be in a position to respond to the council during the week beginning 18 February 2002.
