The export of live cattle provides an essential market balance which helps to sustain prices for the very many farm families in Ireland who rely on beef production for their livelihoods.
I recognise the vital importance of this trade to the industry and I support the retention of the export refunds which make such trade commercially viable. I also recognise firstly that this trade must be based on high standards and that it is essential that the welfare of animals transported from Ireland should be a priority. This country has adopted regulations for the carriage of cattle by sea which are among the best in the world and which are strictly implemented.
As for the method of slaughter used in Lebanon, I understand that the halal method is used.
