339 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of cars registered in the State in 1990 and in the last year for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5749/02]

Minister for the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Dempsey):

At the end of 1990 there were 796,408 private cars currently licensed – taxed – in the State. The corresponding provisional figure for end 2001 is 1,379,000.
