The operation of the Garda compensation scheme under the Garda Síochána (Compensation) Acts, 1941 and 1945 was last reviewed by a committee in 1997. One of the results of this review was a recommendation on the establishment of a compensation tribunal to deal with less serious injuries.
The Garda associations, although represented on the committee, have sought to have some of the recommendations amended. My officials will be meeting with representatives of the associations in the coming weeks after which I propose to bring proposals to Government for consideration.
