Vol. 549 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

341 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the position regarding the restoration of the Ulster Canal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6508/02]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 227 of 21 November regarding the restoration of the Ulster Canal. Since then, my Department, Waterways Ireland and the relevant Departments in the North have met the consultants who prepared the feasibility study into the reopening of the Ulster Canal.

The consideration of the feasibility study has given rise to a number of queries which require further consideration by the consultants and Waterways Ireland. These matters are being addressed and the responses, which are expected soon, will be assessed on receipt.

It is not yet possible to put a definitive timescale on the decision making process on the future of the canal. I also advise that further consultation with interested parties is envisaged before a final decision on the matter is made.
