Question:

127 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when funding for the realignment of Knockylon Road will be made available to South Dublin County Council. [7256/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 126 and 127 together.

I have recently announced a non-national road grant allocation of over €12.143 million in 2002 for South Dublin County Council. This represents an increase of 68% on the council's 2001 allocation, 135% on the 2001 payment and almost 161% on the 1997 payment.

The council's revised submission for 2002, under the EU co-financed specific improvement grants scheme, included applications for the Greenhills Road realignment scheme and the green route/Ballyboden Road Grange Road scheme. The Knocklyon Road scheme was not included in the council's revised submission.

These applications, together with all other applications under the EU co-financed specific improvement grants scheme were considered in my Department having regard to compliance with the eligibility criteria, the need to prioritise projects, competing demands from other local authorities and the funding available for the scheme.

The council's 2002 non-national roads grant allocation includes an allocation of €2 million for the Greenhills Road realignment scheme. In the event the Green Route/ Ballyboden Road- Grange Road scheme was not selected for advancement under the scheme in 2002.
It is open to South Dublin County Council to make an application for funding for these schemes in 2003 in response to my Department's request for applications which will issue later in the year.
