Vol. 550 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Dick Spring

Question:

157 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if funding is in place for the provision of the new Garda station at Castleisland, County Kerry in the 2002 Estimates; and if building will commence in 2002. [9628/02]

Funding for all capital works to Garda properties undertaken under the Garda building programme is a matter for the Office of Public Works. I understand from that office that funding for the programme is in place for 2002.

As regards Castleisland Garda station, I can say that as a first, necessary, step the Office of Public Works has been requested to secure a suitable site in the town for development. Once this has been achieved, the project will be progressed with all due urgency, and in accordance with overall priorities within the Garda building programme and the availability of financial and other resources.

Question:

158 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if funding is in place for the provision of the new Garda station at Tralee, County Kerry in the 2002 Estimates; and if building will commence in 2002. [9629/02]

Funding for all capital works to Garda properties, undertaken under the Garda building programme, is a matter for the Office of Public Works. I understand from that office that funding for the programme is in place for 2002.

As regards Tralee Garda station, I can inform the Deputy that the accommodation requirements of the Gardaí in Tralee are currently being addressed in consultation with the Garda authorities and the Office of Public Works. All options require to be fully and carefully considered, including a relocation to a green field site. Accordingly, I cannot say at this time when the project might commence.
