Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Pat Carey

Question:

489 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science the supports available to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 who is dyslexic; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9741/02]

My Department allocates resources to second level schools to cater for special needs pupils. Applications for such support are made to my Department by the relevant school authorities. Each case is considered on its merits and determined on the advice of the psychological service.

To date, my Department has not received an application from the school authority concerned for extra resources in respect of the pupil referred to by the Deputy. If such an application is received, it will be referred to the psychological service for a report and, as soon as the report has been received and considered, my Department will notify the school authority of the decision.

I have asked my Department to investigate the issue raised by the Deputy as a matter of urgency with a view to ensuring that any necessary support services are put in place.
