Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

43 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources when his Department will provide funding and approval to com mence work on the preservation of the Warren Strand, Rosscarbery under the coast erosion scheme. [8447/02]

Primary responsibility for coast protection works rest with the property owner be that a private individual or a local authority. Cork County Council has submitted proposals in relation to coast protection works at the Warren Strand for consideration by my Department. I have approved the granting of a foreshore lease to Cork County Council to enable coast protection works to be carried out at the Warren. The terms of the lease are being finalised at present. A sum of €4 million has been provided in my Department's Estimates for the 2002 coast protection programme and I will be announcing details of the projects to be funded shortly.
