Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Job Losses.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

58 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the most recent discussions he has had with the owners of Tara Mines regarding their plans for the future of the mine and the ore base; when it is expected that ore production will re-start; if he has received information from the company on the re-employment of laid off workers; if it is expected that all those laid off will be re-employed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9903/02]

While my last meeting with the management of Tara Mines was on 8 January, my officials have maintained contact with the company in the meantime. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the company announced plans on 15 March to invest between €15 million and €20 million in a major improvement programme which will start immediately.

This programme of work will enhance the processing facilities at the mine and allow for a recommencement of production in June, should the company decide that markets have sufficiently improved to allow profitable production. In its announcement on 15 March, the company indicated that the decision whether to restart production in June awaits a further board meeting of the parent company, Outokumpu Oyj, in May. I understand that by June the company would hope to re-employ all those who were laid off at the time the mine was put on care and maintenance.
Question No. 59 answered orally with Question No. 33.
