Question:

590 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of homicides reported to the Garda Síochána to date in 2002; and the comparative figures for 2001. [12072/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 589 and 590 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, as published in the Annual Report of An Garda Síochána for 2000, the total number of homicides, murder and manslaughter, recorded was 56. Of these, 49 were recorded as detected.

The corresponding figures for the year 2001 is 59, of which 52 were recorded as detected. I have been informed by the Garda authorities that these statistics are provisional and may be subject to re-classification.

The total number of homicides recorded from 1 January 2002 to 16 April 2002 is 19, of which 18 are recorded as detected. The corresponding figures for 2001 are 15 homicides, of which 13 were recorded as detected. These statistics are provisional and may be subject to re-classification.
