Question:

65 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the detention of a person (details supplied), a trade union representative who is being held incommunicado in Rutana Prison in Burundi, and to concerns that this person may be subjected to torture and ill treatment; and if an approach will be made to the Government of Burundi highlighting the Government's concerns that this person should have access to his family, legal counsel and adequate medical care, and in so far as he is to be tried, that it should be having regard to due process of the law. The detention of the Burundian trade union representative to whom the Deputy refers has been brought to the attention of my Department through representations received. I have raised the matter with the Government of Burundi and the outcome of the inquiries will be communicated to the Deputy.
