Vol. 552 No. 4

Written Answers. - Juvenile Offenders.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

136 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education and Science the level of funding given to youth groups in Dublin north in view of the growing concern that vandalism and street violence among young people is increasing. [12662/02]

With regard to youth services in Dublin north my Department makes grant aid available through a scheme for special projects for youth and through the local youth club grant scheme.

The special projects for youth scheme is a special fund providing out-of-school youth work programmes and services for young people in particular need. The local youth club grants scheme makes grants available to youth clubs and groups for the support of youth activities at the local level.

Grants in respect of both schemes are operated through the local vocational education committee, in this instance County Dublin VEC. My Department is giving consideration to applications made for youth work funding in 2002, having regard to available financial resources.

The young people's facilities and services fund was established by the Government to develop youth facilities, including sport and recreational facilities and services in disadvantaged areas, where a significant drug problem exists or has the potential to develop, with a view to attracting young people in those areas at risk of becoming involved in drugs into more healthy and productive pursuits. Applications for funding of projects under the second round of the fund for the period 2003-2006 are being sought by the national assessment committee, which is located in the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation.
