Vol. 553 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Olympics.

Question:

612 Mr. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the situation in relation to giving Garda clearance for volunteers helping with the Special Olympics; the group or person who gives approval; if individual applications only are being considered; if block clearance cannot be given to organisations such as one (details supplied) where a clearance method already exists; and if he will make a statement in this regard and ensure block clearance can be given. [13459/02]

I am advised by the Garda authorities that Garda clearance of volunteers for the Special Olympics is being carried out in accordance with the normal established vetting procedure. The volunteer services manager of the 2003 Special Olympic World Games has the overall responsibility to accept or reject volunteer applications. While every application is vetted individually by the Garda Síochána, there is a facility on the volunteer application form for members of a particular organisation, such as the Order of Malta or the Civil Defence, to identify that they are affiliated to that group.
