Vol. 553 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pyramid Selling Schemes.

Mary Upton

Question:

125 Dr. Upton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the position regarding her Department's consideration of legislative options or administrative steps which might be taken to deal with the problem of pyramid gifting schemes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13640/02]

This matter is still under consideration in my Department.

One of the legislative options being explored is that of addressing the issue in the context of gambling legislation. My Department is in consultation with the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform in that connection and I hope to receive recommendations arising from that in the very near future.
In the meanwhile I would repeat my previous warnings that people should be extremely cautious in investing their money in schemes which appear to be too good to be true.
