Vol. 553 No. 2

Written Answers. - Insurance Industry Regulation.

Billy Timmins

Question:

129 Mr. Timmins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her Department is a member of an insurance link scheme, whereby information on insurance claims made is exchanged; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13735/02]

My Department is not a member of an insurance link scheme, whereby information on insurance claims made is exchanged.

With regard to insurance matters, my role relates to the authorisation and prudential supervision of insurance companies with head office in the State and to the monitoring and evaluation of insurance costs and trends and the key contributory factors.

Decisions on the underwriting of insurance risks and setting of premium levels are matters for judgment by individual insurance companies and EU law prevents us from intervening directly in the matter.
