Vol. 553 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Charlie O'Connor

Question:

350 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will review with the Garda authorities, the need for a second Garda station for Tallaght, Dublin 24 to cater for the Tallaght West estates of Brookfield, Fettercairn, Killinarden and Jobstown; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14656/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources to individual areas, that they do not favour an additional Garda station in Tallaght at present. The establishment of a second Garda station in the Tallaght area would necessitate the employment of Garda personnel on indoor administrative duties. Such personnel can be utilised more effectively in providing a visible Garda presence on outdoor duties.

I am also informed that Garda offices in Killinarden, Jobstown and Fettercairn are staffed for a minimum of two hours one day per week. This is a joint initiative with South Dublin County Council who provide a member of their housing staff to deal with accommodation problems and anti-social behaviour in local authority areas.

Seamus Healy

Question:

351 Mr. Healy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his Department's proposals for the renovation of Clonmel Garda station or its replacement, with a new building on an alternative site. [14657/02]

The accommodation needs of the Garda at Clonmel are being considered. All options require to be fully explored, including that of a move to a green field site, and in that regard the Office of Public Works has been requested to investigate the possibility of sourcing a suitable site in the town.
