97 Mr. P. Breen asked the Minister for Finance the number of additional public service workers recruited in 2000, 2001 and 2002 to date; and the cost of the additional recruitment in each year. [14430/02]

The additional number of workers employed in the public service for the years 2000, 2001, and 2002 were as follows:

The estimated cost solely attributed to the increase in numbers based on average numbers serving for the above years are as follows: 2000 –€260 million; 2001 –€453 million; 2002 –€393 million.
The increase in numbers shown above are on a 1 January basis, and are not directly comparable with paybill increases which are based on average numbers for the year as whole. Local authority employees have been excluded as they are not paid from Exchequer resources.
