Vol. 553 No. 6

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Personnel.

Seán Power

Question:

120 Mr. S. Power asked the Minister for Defence his future plans for peacekeeping duties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14899/02]

The total number of Defence Forces personnel currently serving overseas is 518. Full details are listed in the tabular statement which is circulated in the Official Report.

Requests from the United Nations for Irish participation in new missions are considered on a case by case basis within the context of the United Nations stand-by arrangement system. The decision to participate in UNSAS is a tangible expression of Ireland's continuing commitment to involvement in peacekeeping operations.

The question of Defence Forces participation in overseas missions is kept under regular review. The commitment of the Defence Forces to other missions in areas such as disarmament, peacekeeping and human rights will be considered as they arise in the context of Government policy on peacekeeping.
