Written Answers. - Light Rail Project.

Seán Crowe

Question:

242 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Transport the amount of money which has been spent on advertising the Luas since its conception. [15268/02]

The promotion, marketing and provision of public information on the Luas project is a day to day matter for the Railway Procurement Agency and I have no function in the matter.

Seán Crowe

Question:

243 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Transport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that it is the opinion of a broad spectrum in Dublin south west that it is a social, economic and financial imperative that the Luas be extended beyond the Square, Tallaght, Dublin 24. [15269/02]

The development of public transport services in the greater Dublin area is being undertaken within the strategic context of The Platform for Change, which is an integrated transport strategy covering the period 2000 to 2016, developed by the Dublin Transportation Office. Consistent with this strategy, the Luas line from Connolly Station to Tallaght is under construction at present and will be completed by the end of 2003.

The Government has also approved, in principle, the development of a Metro for Dublin. The Metro system will be developed in phases and the procurement for phase 1, involving a line from Dublin Airport and Blanchardstown through the city centre to Shanganagh, has begun. Phase 2 includes the extension of the Blanchardstown line to Tallaght with a spur to City West. The Railway Procurement Agency has been established to deliver the Metro on a public private partnership basis.
