Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Environmental Policy.

Finian McGrath

Question:

1461 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the practical proposals he has to improve the quality of life for the people in Clontarf, Dublin 3, particularly in relation to air pollution. [15586/02]

Dublin City Council, in its responsibilities for planning and development, housing, environment protection and infrastructure, is the public authority most directly mandated for improving the amenities and environment of particular parts of its functional area. As regards major relevant projects being assisted by my Department, the Dublin region wastewater treatment scheme, currently nearing completion, will significantly improve water quality throughout Dublin Bay. This €328m project will transport waste water from Dublin city and surrounds to a new treatment works in Ringsend due for completion later this year. Treatment will incorporate preliminary, secondary and tertiary processes, with nitrogen removal, and ultraviolet disinfection.

The benefits will include – improved water quality in Dublin Bay, allowing it to comply with the Dublin Bay water quality management plan, cessation of discharges of untreated sewage from the Nose of Howth and improvement of bathing water quality at Dollymount Strand which will facilitate its qualification for blue flag status.
