Vol. 555 No. 2

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately. I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. With regard to the first topic I have received notice from Deputy Ned O'Keeffe and I will call on him to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the job losses that have arisen at Irish Fertilizer Industries, including 250 jobs at Great Island, Cobh, County Cork, in addition to the serious effects this will have on the economic stability of the area with the loss of a further 200 jobs in service industries. These job losses will also affect Iarnród Éireann which provides a rail service there. The company is the last heavy industry left in the region. As a result of its loss, Cobh will become a dormant town totally dependent on jobs outside Cobh and Great Island. Many of the affected jobs were held by people for over 20 years. Due to their mature years such people will have great difficulty in obtaining alternative employment. These job losses will be totally devastating for the region.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, cannot grant leave to move the motion.

On a point of order, the situation is really serious.

I am sorry, Deputy, but a point of order cannot be raised on the Chair's ruling on this matter. With regard to the second topic, I have notice from Deputy Richard Bruton. I will now call on him to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the measures that can be taken to increase safety for young people who are attending places of entertainment, so that the trend towards vicious and drunken attacks can be confronted by concerted initiatives across all the agencies involved.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, cannot grant leave to move the motion.
