Vol. 555 No. 2

Adjournment Debate. - Medicinal Products.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

344 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children the position in regard to various herbal medicines with particular reference to EU directives; the position adopted by Ireland in respect of the directive in question; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18401/02]

The examination of the EU directive on traditional herbal medicinal products is currently continuing at the European Parliament and Council. I welcome the benefits that the new directive will provide to consumers in this country in the context of improved quality and safety of traditional medicinal products.

I am aware that some concerns have been expressed about certain aspects of the directive, and my officials are currently seeking to ascertain the degree of support amongst other member states for a means to address such concerns.
