Vol. 555 No. 3

Written Answers. - Licensing of Casinos.

John Deasy

Question:

247 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of casinos operating in Dublin; if he will agree that it is desirable that all such operations should be licensed by the State; and if so, when he proposes to introduce the necessary legislation. [18603/02]

I can inform the Deputy that no licenses for the operation of a casino have been issued in this jurisdiction. I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are aware of four establishments in the Dublin area which may be operating activities similar to that of a casino and the Garda continue to monitor the activity in such premises with a view to ensuring that criminal offences are not being committed. I have no plans to introduce legislation to license the operation of casinos.
