Vol. 555 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Disciplinary Proceedings.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

17 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action which has been taken by the Garda authorities arising from the very serious criticism of the conduct of two Garda officers made by a judge in the Special Criminal Court in a case (details supplied); if the two gardaí remain on normal duties; when the promised Garda inquiry will be concluded; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18496/02]

I am advised by the Garda authorities that the investigation by the officer appointed by the Garda Commissioner is at an advanced stage. In relation to the two gardaí involved, as my predecessor stated in answer to Parliamentary Question No. 7 of 21 February 2002, one of them was transferred on 1 May 2001 into a designated clerical position and the second remains on normal detective duties.
