Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Suicide Incidence.

Bernard Allen

Question:

479 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if, in view of the major problem of suicide here, he will make a statement on the result of a study carried out by a person (details supplied) with a special interest in suicidology, as reported in a journal of 20 September 2002, that up to 50% of final year general practitioner trainees are not happy with the training they received in dealing with suicidal patients. [20579/02]

Funding was provided to Dr. Patrick Halligan by the Department of Health and Children under its general medical services research and education fund to conduct a study on the impact of patient suicide on the general practitioner.

My Department awaits the results of Dr. Halligan's latest research, which I understand has not yet been finalised.
