Paddy McHugh

Question:

221 Mr. McHugh asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if, on the basis of information gleaned from the recent census, revisions will be required to the local authority electoral boundaries in County Galway; if so, if the work will be carried out by an independent commission or by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Question:

222 Mr. McHugh asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if, on the basis of information gleaned from the recent census, revisions will be required to Dáil constituency boundaries; when the commission will be set up; when he expects the commission to have its work completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20793/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 221 and 222 together.

The establishment of a constituency commission to review Dáil and European Parliament constituencies under Part 2 of the Electoral Act, 1997, will be considered when the census report setting out the population of the State classified by area is published by the Central Statistics Office next year. The need to review local electoral areas will also be considered at that stage. If a review of local constituencies is decided upon the Local Government Act, 2001, requires that the Local Government Commission be requested to prepare a report on the matter.
