Vol. 557 No. 1

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

365 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if it is proposed to protect the title of physical therapist in proposed legislation to regulate and register the profession of physiotherapists; when it is intended to publish such a Bill; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21496/02]

It is proposed that the Health and Social Care Professionals Bill establishing a system of statutory registration for health and social care professionals will be published in mid-2003. It is proposed that physiotherapists will be included in the system of statutory registration and that the title of physiotherapist will be protected. As it is not proposed that physical therapists will be among the first tranche of professions to participate in the system of statutory registration, the question of protecting the title of physical therapist would not be expected to arise under the legislation.
