Vol. 557 No. 2

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Pat Carey

Question:

257 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress in putting the closed circuit television scheme for Finglas, Dublin 11 in place; if it is proposed to avail of the offer of support from statutory and other bodies to fund additional cameras; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21827/02]

As the Deputy is aware, Finglas is one of 17 locations set to receive new Garda CCTV systems over the next two years, subject to the availability of funds. The other locations are Athlone, Ballyfermot, Bray, Carlow, Castlebar, Clondalkin, Clonmel, Dundalk, Dún Laoghaire, Ennis, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, Sligo, Tallaght and Waterford. Contracts have been placed in relation to the CCTV systems for Bray, Dundalk, Dún Laoghaire, Finglas, Galway and Limerick. Work is currently ongoing in each of these locations and it is intended that the installation of cameras will commence on completion of the planning process with the relevant local authorities and the refurbishment of rooms in the different Garda stations to accommodate the systems.

Preparation of the detailed technical specification documents by the Garda authorities for the CCTV systems in Athlone, Clondalkin, Tallaght and Waterford is well advanced and these are expected to go to tender in 2003. Planning for the installation of the CCTV systems in the remaining seven areas is also scheduled to commence in 2003. In relation to Finglas, it was intended that the system would consist of nine cameras to be monitored from Finglas Garda station. An offer has been made from statutory and other bodies to fund additional cameras for incorporation in the Finglas scheme. This offer has been referred to the advisory committee, established by the Garda Commissioner to evaluate applications for CCTV systems, for consideration. I expect to be in a position to decide on this matter upon receipt of the committee's views.
