Vol. 558 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin Transportation Office.

John Dennehy

Question:

193 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for Transport if he will give consideration to establishment of a transportation office for Cork along the lines of the Dublin Transportation Office in view of the increasing traffic congestion in the city; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23974/02]

The Cork area strategic plan, CASP, commissioned jointly by Cork County Council and Cork City Council, was published in 2001. It provides a vision of how integrated land use, the development of public transport and further infrastructure will enhance the sustainable and orderly growth of the city and its surrounding region.

I understand that Cork County and City Council are putting in place arrangements to ensure effective monitoring and implementation of the plan. They include a policy committee with elected members from both the city and county council and the town councils within the CASP area. A steering committee is also being established with representatives of transport providers, Departments, semi-States and business and educational interests along with the city and county managers. These committees will be supported by a CASP office with a full-time CASP co-ordinator and other relevant staff.

These arrangements will fulfil a similar role to that of the Dublin Transportation Office which was established in the context of the need for co-ordinated implementation by a considerable number of agencies of an integrated transportation strategy for the greater Dublin area prepared by the Dublin transportation initiative.
