Vol. 558 No. 2

Written Answers. - Northern Ireland Issues.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

198 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the implications for the peace process in Northern Ireland of the decision of the IRA to end co-operation with the de Chastelain Commission; if the Government has sought or intends to seek a meeting with Sinn Féin to discuss this development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20522/02]

Trevor Sargent

Question:

201 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Government has had contacts with the British authorities concerning the suspension of the Provisional IRA's contacts with General John de Chastelain's decommissioning body; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20563/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 198 and 201 together.

I have already indicated publicly my disappointment at the decision to disengage from contact with the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning.

Officials from my Department have regular contacts with both the UK authorities and Sinn Féin in relation to decommissioning. The Deputies will be aware, in particular, of the discussions taking place at present between various parties with a view to seeking a resolution to the difficulties which have arisen in securing the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
