Vol. 558 No. 2

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Personnel.

Seán Power

Question:

113 Mr. S. Power asked the Minister for Defence the number of Defence Forces personnel who will be on overseas duty for Christmas 2002; the missions on which they are serving; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23990/02]

A total of 488 Defence Forces personnel are serving overseas, full details of which are listed in the table which follows. With the deployment of an additional officer to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) on 15 December 2002 and the reduction in the number of Irish personnel serving in the force HQ of the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) from 12 to ten with effect from 11 December 2002, it is expected that approximately 487 personnel will be serving overseas during Christmas 2002.

Defence Forces personnel serving on overseas missions are deployed on six-month rotations or multiples of six months in some instances, for example one to two year deployments or secondments. The rotation of the Defence Forces contingent serving with UNMEE will take place early next month. No rotations are due over the Christmas period in overseas peacekeeping missions and, as such, there will be no change in the numbers serving overseas on these missions in the period.
