Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - Health Screening.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

147 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if mandatory health screening for non-nationals is being considered; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24177/02]

Screening in respect of specific infectious diseases is offered to asylum seekers by health boards. This screening service is offered on a voluntary basis to asylum seekers in the interest of the asylum seekers, their families and the community generally.

The guidelines on infectious disease screening recommend that screening be offered for the following diseases: tuberculosis, hepatitis B, polio, varicella-zoster, chickenpox and HIV.

The introduction of mandatory health screening for non-nationals is not being considered at this time.
