Written Answers. - National Theatre.

Jack Wall

Question:

290 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism his efforts to develop the theatre here; the meetings with the Arts Council in regard to such development; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24830/02]

My Department is working with the board of the National Theatre and the Office of Public Works to redevelop the National Theatre's premises. My Department's ACCESS scheme will provide €45.71 million over the period 2001 to 2004 towards the development of various forms of artistic and cultural infrastructure around the country, including theatres. The Arts Council, a statutory agency which operates independently of Government on a day-to-day basis, is responsible for the development of art forms, including theatre, and is the principal channel through which Government provides current funding for the arts.
