Written Answers. - Archaeological Sites.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

32 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands her proposals regarding the important archaeological site at Grady's Yard, County Waterford (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6761/02]

Austin Deasy

Question:

41 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will ensure the proposed development in Grady's Yard in Waterford City does not interfere with the archaeological integrity of the medieval water-gate at that location and that the structure is preserved from intrusion by new buildings or other structures; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6866/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 32 and 41 together.

Grady's Yard abuts the inside of the medieval city wall which enclosed St. John's Abbey and the approach to the crossing on St. John's river. The site includes a water-gate bastion. This bastion is an early and rare gunnery work and a site of significant archaeological importance. In 2001 my Department registered the site as an historic monument thus affording it protection under National Monuments Acts. I am aware of the proposal to construct a high-rise development on this site and my officials have held detailed discussions with the developer in order to ensure the satisfactory preservation and presentation of the site. These discussions are continuing and my officials are currently awaiting a response in respect of further specified requirements regarding revised proposals for the development. I understand that there has been no planning application to date for such a development. The Deputies will of course appreciate that the granting of planning permission in any particular case is a matter for the relevant planning authority and not for my Department.
