Vol. 558 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Network.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

339 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Transport if he intends to review the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of National Roads Order), 1994, with a view to upgrading national secondary roads of strategic importance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24279/02]

A comprehensive review of the national and regional road system was concluded in 1994 with the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of National Roads) Order, 1994, and the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of Regional Roads) Order, 1994. This review was carried out in consultation with local authorities and took account of representations received from a wide range of local interests.

The need for changes to be made with regard to the classification of roads in the national or regional network is being kept under review, including in the context of the recently published national spatial strategy. Traffic patterns on the network will continue to be monitored in order to identify any long-term changes which might have implications for road classification.
