Vol. 558 No. 6

Written Answers. - Penalty Points System.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

35 Mr. Gilmore asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she has had discussions or plans to have discussions with the insurance industry with a view to ensuring that motorists who do not incur penalty points benefit from reduced premiums; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [24861/02]

The pricing and underwriting of insurance is a matter for each insurance company and EU law prevents governments from intervening in such matters.

The penalty points system was introduced by my colleague, the Minister for Transport, Deputy Brennan. I understand that insurance companies have intimated to him that they wish to formulate an agreement in relation to their assessment of driver risk following its introduction.
