Vol. 559 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Traffic Management.

Paul McGrath

Question:

359 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on whether Operation Freeflow is a success; and if he will consider extending it throughout the year. [26797/02]

Despite exceptionally difficult circumstances this year including extensive Luas works, works at the Dublin Port Tunnel, construction at the Wyattville Interchange and severe disruption to DART services this morning, Operation Freeflow has proven successful to date and traffic flows have noticeably improved.

In addition to the temporary transfer of additional gardaí to traffic duties in the Dublin metropolitan region, Operation Freeflow also involves the prohibition of most road works on all main arteries in and around the city. However, local authorities have to be given an opportunity to improve roads and maintain services even though this may result in traffic disruption. I am sure the Deputy will also appreciate that while improved traffic flow can take precedence over some other policing duties at certain times, this would not be feasible on an ongoing basis.
