The Prison Service provides work training schemes within a number of prisons in a workshop environment. These workshops provide inmates with the opportunity to acquire skills that will assist them in gaining employment when they are released. Examples of these activities are printing, metal work, woodwork, clothing, craft, etc. Income is generated from the sale of items manufactured in the prison workshops and from the sale of produce from the farm in Shelton Abbey. Total manufacturing income for year ended 31 December 2001 amounted to €949,348. This was generated from the following prisons:

Each prison also operates a tuck-shop which sells confectionery and other small items to prisoners. It is not possible to supply the turnover figures for these tuck-shops or to give a more detailed breakdown of the figures for the workshops at this time due to resource commitments in the accounting area and the fact that these records are maintained in manual format.
