Vol. 559 No. 6

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Joe Costello

Question:

213 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the measures he intends to introduce following the brutal murder of a person (details supplied) in Limerick to protect night club security employees against drug pushers and other criminal elements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26880/02]

While I share the concerns expressed by the Deputy about this atrocious crime, he will appreciate that it would be inappropriate of me to comment other than to confirm that it is being actively investigated by An Garda Síochána. In relation to measures to protect nightclub employees, I am assured by the Garda authorities that a long-established and excellent relationship has been maintained in Limerick city with members of the licensed trade, including the management and owners of nightclubs. I am informed that closer liaison has been established in recent months, involving the Limerick City Council authorities, to address such issues as security, safety, public order and drugs. I am further informed that additional measures are being taken, as appropriate, following an assessment by the local Garda authorities of the specific concerns of nightclub security personnel in the city centre.
