Vol. 559 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Paddy McHugh

Question:

45 Mr. McHugh asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that his Department gave approval to County Galway VEC to proceed to tender stage for the provision of a science laboratory, refurbished home economics room and refurbished toilets at Tuam Vocational School, County Galway, on condition that the works be complete before the end of 2002; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this work has not yet commenced due to the fact that the tenders have not yet been approved by his Department; when he will give approval to enable the works to commence; and his views on whether the students in this school are badly treated due to the fact that they are now entering their third year without a science lab in an environment where science subjects are being promoted by his Department. [26719/02]

In October of this year, a tender report was received in the building unit of my Department from County Galway VEC for works at Tuam vocational school. An examination of the report revealed discrepancies that have only recently been largely resolved. The matter of placing a contract for this project will be determined when framing the 2003 programme of works, which I intend to publish early in the new year.

Question No. 46 answered with Question No. 32.
