Vol. 560 No. 1

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Tony Gregory

Question:

361 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of untrained teachers employed in national schools here; the number employed in disadvantaged national schools in Dublin; the options available to them to qualify while continuing to work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1168/03]

There are currently 981 untrained teachers paid in primary schools in the State. Some 150 of these teachers are employed in Dublin, in schools which are designated as disadvantaged. All untrained teachers are employed in a temporary capacity.

All aspects of primary teacher training are the subject of ongoing review between my Department and the colleges of education. My Department is also examining further options for addressing the teacher supply issue in consultation with relevant interests.
