Vol. 560 No. 4

Written Answers. - Early School Leavers.

Michael Noonan

Question:

218 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the absenteeism and the rate of drop out from the primary and secondary schools in the St. Munchin's and Corpus Christi parishes in Limerick City; if he will appoint an education welfare officer to the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2941/03]

The National Educational Welfare Board is now the single national body with responsibility for school attendance matters. It is an independent statutory body established under the Education (Welfare) Act 2000, to implement the provisions of the Act. The appointment and assignment of staff are matters for consideration by the board. I will arrange that the Deputy's concerns are conveyed to the board for appropriate attention.
