Vol. 560 No. 5

Written Answers. - Motor Taxation.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

152 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the arrangements made with local authorities to reimburse them for the cost of collecting motor taxation and transmitting same to the Exchequer; if a change in the reimbursement arrangements has taken place; and the details of such changes. [3073/03]

Prior to this year, my Department approved on an annual basis an amount which local authorities were permitted to deduct from motor tax receipts in respect of their costs in collecting motor tax.

Local authorities have been allocated a grant for 2003 from the Local Government Fund in respect of costs to be incurred by them in collecting motor tax. This grant will be paid in instalments during the year. With effect from next year, the grant will be added to, and consolidated into, the general purpose grant to local authorities and thereafter will benefit from such across the board increases as may be applied to that grant from time to time.
