Vol. 562 No. 4

Written Answers - Youth Services.

Seán Ó Fearghaíl

Question:

398 Mr. Ó Fearghaíl asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will approve funding for a youth diversion project for the Curragh Camp, County Kildare. [6348/03]

The Deputy may be aware that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of Garda youth diversion projects in recent years, from 12 in 1997 to 64 at present. This process has been made possible, in part, by funding under the national development plan. The locations of the new projects were decided upon according to local needs, prioritised by the Garda authorities, in conjunction with my Department. Funding of €5,577,000 has been allocated to these and related projects in the current year. A proposal to establish a Garda youth diversion project in the Curragh Camp area has been received and will be considered when funding to establish further projects becomes available. The matter will be kept under review in the meantime.
