Vol. 562 No. 4

Written Answers - Asylum Applications.

Paul McGrath

Question:

407 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the estimated total expenditure on the refugee and asylum seekers programme for each of the past five years. [6513/03]

While the costs arising from the provision of services for asylum seekers and refugees are primarily a matter for the Departments and State agencies providing such services, information available to me for 2000, 2001 and 2002 indicates that the amount spent on asylum seeker services for the years in question was in the region of €180 million, €226 million and €340 million respectively. Details of expenditure for previous years are not available to me. In relation to the cost of providing services to asylum seekers by my Department, the following table sets out the moneys allocated between 1998 and 2002 in subheads G and G1 of my Department's Vote covering the asylum determination and related immigration including repatriation processes and legal aid for asylum seekers.

No detailed figures are available to me in respect of the provision of services to persons who obtained refugee status in the State. Such costs would be met by the individual Departments providing such services.
