Question:

416 Dr. Cowley asked the Minister for Health and Children if ?103 million has been spent on the development of cancer services since 1997 with an additional ?29 million allocated in this year's budget; if he will give a breakdown of the cumulative figure of ?400 million which is being described as being invested in the development of cancer services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Since the implementation of the national cancer strategy commenced in 1997, there has been a cumulative additional investment of approximately €400 million in the development of treatment and care services for people with cancer. This includes the sum of €29 million which was provided this year to ensure that we continue to address increasing demands in cancer services in such areas as oncology/haematology services, oncology drug treatments and symptomatic breast disease services.

My Department is currently analysing investment data since 1997 in the areas of health promotion and palliative care as they relate to cancer services. The above figures will be revised as soon as this exercise is complete.
