Vol. 563 No. 2

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

Willie Penrose

Question:

208 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if the school building project for Loreto College, Mullingar, County Westmeath, has been approved since the 1997-98 academic school year; if same is at stage 3 now; if his Department is completely happy with the plans submitted; if his attention has been drawn to the extreme urgency associated with this project in view of the fact that there are now 842 students in a school built to accommodate 650, that some of the buildings are not fit for the purpose for which they are required, and that there is no gym available for this large number of pupils; and if, in view of the foregoing verifiable facts, the project will be allowed to move to stage 4. [7533/03]

The 2003 school building programme has been published and full details in relation to individual projects are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. The extension project at Loreto College, Mullingar, County Westmeath is at an early stage of architectural planning, stage 3, and is included in section 7 of the 2003 capital programme. Having regard to the level of financial commitments to be met from projects already in construction, projects listed in section 7 will not be authorised to progress beyond their current stage of architectural planning in the current year.
