Vol. 563 No. 5

Written Answers - Departmental Expenditure.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

221 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the various headings under which expenditure has occurred in his Department since he took office; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8512/03]

Since the establishment of my Department in 2002, our programme expenditure has been concentrated under the broad headings of "An Ghaeilge agus An Ghaeltacht", "Community Affairs", and "Rural Affairs", as indicated in the revised Estimates volume for 2003, which was published recently.

Under "An Ghaeilge agus an Ghaeltacht", expenditure is focused on An Foras Teanga, the North-South language body, the operation of various schemes within the Gaeltacht, the provision of support to Údarás na Gaeltachta and Ciste na Gaeilge, as well as funding towards the improvement of the infrastructure and facilities on inhabited offshore islands.

Expenditure under the heading "Community Affairs" covers the community development support programmes, various local development and voluntary initiatives, the national drugs strategy, the Programme for Peace and Reconciliation, youth services and facilities, and Waterways Ireland, the North-South waterways body.

As regards "Rural Affairs", my Department allocates funding to the Western Development Commission and Western Investment Fund, together with various rural development schemes, including the area-based rural development initiative, Leader+, INTERREG, the peace programme and CLÁR.
The current and capital spend from 1 January to 20 March 2003 across my Department's Vote was €37.69 million.
Questions Nos. 222 and 223 answered with Question No. 149.
