Vol. 563 No. 6

Written Answers - Hospital Services.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

84 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the trauma being caused to Cavan patients by the closure of the orthopaedic services in Cavan General Hospital; his views on whether it is right and fair that a mother should have to pay ?130 to have their child taken from Cavan General Hospital to Drogheda to have their child's arm dealt with and subsequently having to go back from Cootehill to Drogheda for further examinations, with a total taxi bill of ?130 which this person cannot afford; if he will take steps to have the unit re-opened or to advise that costs such as this should be refundable to families on minimum social welfare income; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8609/03]

Responsibility for the provision of hospital services to residents of County Cavan rests with the North-Eastern Health Board. My Department has, therefore, asked the chief executive officer of the board to investigate the position in relation to the issues raised and to reply directly to the Deputy.
